Abstract:
This study examined the effect of using Filipino as the medium of instruction on students’ comprehension in Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino. Specifically, it determined students’ comprehension levels based on their pretest and posttest scores and examined the significant difference between the two assessments. A quantitative approach using a pre-test-post-test control group design was employed. Thirty (30) students from a private school in Tacloban City were selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and paired samples t-test. Findings showed a substantial improvement in students’ comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 19.70 (SD = 6.20) in the pretest to 24.97 (SD = 2.67) in the posttest. The lower standard deviation indicated more consistent student performance after the intervention. The results demonstrated that using Filipino as the medium of instruction effectively enhanced students’ comprehension of the subject. The study recommended the continued use of Filipino to promote meaningful learning and improve academic performance.
