Abstract:

Language is essential for effective communication, requiring mastery of grammatical rules to convey meaning accurately. However, many students still encounter challenges in learning these rules, which may affect their academic performance and communication skills. This study aimed to examine the impact of the English Enhancement Class on the grammatical awareness of senior high school students. Using a mixed-methods research method, the study involved 52 respondents purposively. A pretest was administered to assess senior high school students’ prior grammatical knowledge and identify English language topics to be covered during a two-semester program implementation. Following the English intervention, a posttest was conducted to measure the level of grammatical awareness. An expert-validated survey questionnaire and open-ended interview questions were also utilized to validate the quantitative findings and examine the relationship between the senior high school students’ perceptions of the English Enhancement Class and their grammatical awareness. The results revealed that senior high school students demonstrated a highly favorable level of grammatical awareness. While participants perceived the English Enhancement Class positively, no significant relationship was found between their perceptions and grammatical awareness. Despite the lack of statistically significant quantitative evidence, the qualitative findings indicated that the program positively enhanced senior high students’ learning experiences, confidence, and understanding of English grammar. These findings provided a basis for targeted recommendations aimed at strengthening students’ grammatical development, improving instructional practices, and continuously improving implementation of the English Enhancement Program.
