Abstract:
In this study, the young adult fiction Anina ng mga Alon by Eugene Y. Evasco is extensively examined through the lens of Galileo S. Zafra’s Loob, Ligid, at Lalim. The intrinsic literary elements of the text were analyzed under loob, while ligid focuses on various contexts, particularly the social context, which addresses issues such as war and oppression, gender, poverty, education, prejudice, globalization, and environmental degradation. In the lalim dimension, the work’s ‘dating’ (aesthetic and ideological appeal) was evaluated through the framework of Nicanor Tiongson’s Kamalayang Pilipino na maka-TAO (Filipino humanistic consciousness). Findings reveal that the literary work possesses significant ‘dating,’ as it raises awareness of Indigenous minorities as marginalized groups, departs from conventional representations of children in narratives, and offers a sense of hope to marginalized communities. The study further demonstrates that the sociological approach to literature is an appropriate and effective framework for analyzing the text. Moreover, the literary work articulates fundamental human rights, including opportunities for the realization of human potential regardless of gender, access to quality education, and freedom of expression, among others. Ultimately, the text serves as a powerful voice that awakens the dormant and unresponsive consciousness of Filipinos, encouraging a sense of national responsibility and civic engagement. Hence, it is imperative that this literary work be integrated as a core component of the literature curriculum from secondary to tertiary levels.
