Abstract:
This research is an analysis of selected chapters of Noli Me Tangere using the formalist approach, particularly Kabanata 1 (Isang Pagtitipon), Kabanata 6 (Si Kapitan Tiago), Kabanata 8 (Mga Gunita), Kabanata 10 (Ang Bayan ng San Diego), at Kabanata 12 (Todos Los Santos). The analysis focuses on the characterization of the characters, the selection of scenes and settings, and the structure of the plot in the chosen chapters of the novel. Through content analysis, it was found that Rizal employed both direct and indirect characterization, as well as expository, exciting, and dramatic scenes to highlight the social realities of his time. Furthermore, he used a linear plot structure in Chapters 1 and 12, while a flashback structure was observed in Chapters 6, 8, and 10. Based on the findings, a worktext was developed containing interactive activities such as graphic organizers, comic strips, and visual mapping to deepen students’ understanding of the text. The study demonstrates that formalist analysis is an effective method to enhance students’ critical thinking skills and connect literature to their personal experiences and the society they live in.
