Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the competence of Technical Livelihood Education teachers along with their Instructional Skills, Guidance Skills, Classroom Management Skills and Teaching Techniques Skills as perceived by the students and teachers at Tuba, Benguet. Additionally, it determined the extent of challenges encountered by the teachers that affects the effective and successful teaching and learning process. Also, it identifies the extent of helpfulness of the coping mechanisms they employ to alleviate the problems and challenges. Descriptive Quantitative Analysis were used in exploring the level of competence of teachers, the challenges they faced and their coping mechanisms. The important findings of the study indicate that students perceived the teachers as highly competent in Instructional Skills, Guidance Skills and Classroom Management Skills while the teachers rated themselves as very competent in their Teaching Technique skills. The teachers rated the following problems as very challenging; lack of laboratory classrooms and facilities, unrepaired equipment’s, limited time which compromises instructional quality, determining the learning abilities and potentials of the students. To alleviate these problems coping mechanisms that are rated by the teachers as Extremely helpful such as providing students downloaded educational programs, use of performance-based assessments and being adaptive to new assessment tools and methodologies. There is no significant difference on the Instructional, Guidance, Classroom Management and Teaching Technique of TLE teachers as perceived by teachers and students. Also, no significant differences on the problems encountered and the coping mechanisms of teachers in terms of their length of service and field of specialization.
