Abstract:
Youth in today’s time are becoming vocal and bold in voicing their views on different social concerns, thus the role of developing their speaking proficiency becomes crucial. The speaking proficiency of the youth of Inayagan, Naga, Cebu reflects its weaknesses and strengths that influence their overall communication significantly. This research will determine the speaking proficiency of the selected respondents in Brgy. Inayagan, Naga, Cebu. A quantitative approach using survey research was utilized to collect data. The study revealed that the most commonly used oral activity among the youth is video calling. While their strengths in speaking were honesty and friendliness, the absence of eye contact was determined as the main weakness among the youth. It was also found that practice and preparation are the most significant steps in oral activities. The skills of clear and effective speaking, speaking respectfully to the listener, and staying on track regarding the topic are the skills the youth aim to acquire. From this, the conclusion was made that building speaking skills is vital in becoming an effective speaker and having effective communication. From the gathered data, an intervention program was designed to offer training and seminars or workshops to improve the youth of Inayagan, Naga, Cebu’s speaking skills, thus their communication and personal growth.
