Abstract:

This study developed seven project-based learning activities for General Biology 1 most essential learning competencies for the most essential learning competencies in Biology with features of key knowledge, understanding, and success skills, challenging question, authenticity, reflection, and public product. These were subjected to jurors’ evaluation in terms of Department of Education standards, alignment to most essential learning competencies, and presence of features. The study also determined the students’ experiences during the process of accomplishing the project-based learning activities and the insights they derived from their learning experiences. This study utilized a descriptive developmental design. The respondents were the 62 Grade 11 STEM students of Tabaco National High School for the School Year 2020-2021. They belong to Digital Modular Distance Learning (DMDL) class. The jurors’ assessment of the project-based learning activities obtained a passing rating on all the criteria indicated in LRMDs—content, format, presentation and organization, accuracy, and up-to-datedness of information. The jurors also gave a very highly evident rating on all the criteria—alignment to most essential learning competencies and presence of features, meaning the lessons met most of the expectations. Based on journal entries and observation sheets, students had positive and negative experiences in accomplishing the project-based learning activities which were observed in four stages: preliminary, planning, development, and presentation. They also shared insights that were derived from their learning experiences.
