Abstract:

This research paper focuses on the analysis of the television series Maria Clara at Ibarra, which is based on the novel Noli Me Tangere, through a new lens—sexism. This study aims to serve as a bridge to encourage Filipino youth to re-engage with Philippine literature and to deepen their understanding of gender discrimination. Utilizing Gadamer’s Phenomenological Hermeneutics Theory, the research illustrates the context of the teleserye, identifies the main characters who portrayed sexist behaviors, highlights the differences between the teleserye and the novel, and explores the implications of these differences for the Filipino youth. A phenomenological descriptive method and content analysis were employed to examine significant insights from both works. Based on the research, it was found that ten characters displayed sexist behavior across thirteen scenes, corresponding to four chapters of the novel. The study also revealed that the teleserye had a positive impact on the mental, emotional, moral, and social aspects of Filipino youth. In line with this, the research recommends the use of the video podcast and the teleserye itself as instructional materials in Filipino classes, as well as in other subjects such as Social Studies and Values Education. The goal is to raise awareness among Filipino youth about gender discrimination and the historical context of our nation. The researchers hope that studies like this and the production of similar teleseryes will continue in the future.
