Abstract:
This study aims to examine the experiences related to the use of Phil-IRI as a foundation for developing programs that enhance reading comprehension. The research seeks to interpret the perceptions of students with different reading profiles based on their experiences with the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) process. Additionally, it analyzes the perceptions of Filipino subject teachers regarding the Phil-IRI results to propose improvements and the creation of effective reading programs. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was employed in analyzing the data. Teachers answered surveys using a Likert Scale to capture their perceptions, while the Phil-IRI tool was used to gather the overall reading profiles of students from Grades 7 to 10 in Junior High School. Findings revealed that Phil-IRI significantly contributes not only to assessing students’ reading abilities but also to motivating them toward active learning and strengthening their self-awareness regarding their skills. For teachers, Phil-IRI serves as an essential guide for monitoring students’ progress and for designing more effective teaching strategies. The study recommends using Phil-IRI as a launching point for developing reading programs aimed at further enhancing students’ reading proficiency and overall reading levels.
